QR Codes in the Mainstream

Marketing. Web-to-Print. Warehouse Management.

They have been big in Japan and Europe for a number of years. But over the past few months, QR Codes have started to make more of an impact in North America. The 2-D barcodes are primarily placed on printed materials. From there, people scan the codes with their smart phones, and be directed to a website, a message, or some other marketing-related response form.

QR Codes are being seen on business cards, direct mail pieces, magazine ads, billboards and more. They are also being used by a variety of industries.

Depending on your target audience, QR Codes may be able to help increase the success of your future marketing efforts.

To help you visualize ways that QR Codes could possibly be used, here are a few examples from the marketing world.
In Fashion – Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren launched a US Open tennis tournament campaign. It included channels such as billboards, banners and print ads all marked with “RL-QR’s” — aka Ralph Lauren Quick Response codes.

By decoding the QR code, people acquired the ability to shop from their phone for the advertised US Open Collection, read RL Magazine and watch RLTV Videos.

For the Big Screen – 9

Tim Burton’s most recent film 9 hit theaters this September using QR codes in their promotional posters. By decoding the poster’s QR code the 9 trailer would download and play on their mobile phone.

In Your Town – Arkansas Department of Tourism

The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism are using QR Codes to help visitors to their state more quickly get information and find their way around. For example, the codes will be used to help me get information on subjects such as driving routes, itineraries, maps, city dining and lodging information, and hot deals and packages.
These are just a couple of the recent stories that help demonstrate ways QR Codes can be used.
