Over the past couple of days, we had the privilege of hosting a customer at our corporate offices.

We discussed many items — there was some technical training, but also general discussions on how they could improve their own marketing efforts.

The customer is looking to start a newsletter and a blog.. But one of their biggest questions was: “what do we write about?”

Here is the advice we provided… Perhaps it will help you as well:

A Plan for What You Can Write About

The best thing is to create a strategy document. It doesn’t need to have a lot of text. Perhaps it has a goal in regards to frequency (i.e. at least one new post every week). And most importantly, it should list different categories of what the blog posts could/should be about.

By providing these categories, it will help the individual writers start with something more than a blank slate.

If you are a marketing services provider, perhaps this could be your list of categories:

  • General Marketing Knowledge  – (Lead Generation, One-to-One Marketing, Managing Your Lists)
  • Commentary on articles and surveys from marketing publications
  • Successful case studies on solutions you’ve provided
  • Get personal with our company (it might be pictures, videos, or internal news that’s safe for the public)
  • Event Promotion (trade shows, seminars, networking events)
  • Practical Tips for Making People’s Lives Easier (perhaps it’s a tool that you’ve found on the web, or in an app store, that helps improve productivity)

Those are just a few topics, but I think they can produce a lot of different stories.

When you’re stuck looking for what to write, reading through the list/strategy document can help you focus on what’s bouncing around your mind, and then convert that into something that might helpful to your blog and its readers.
